Six: Teen Edition, what can I say, where to start? This was most definitely a team production, a team that brought together everything – movement, sound, lighting, costumes, vocals all in an hour and a quarter giving the audience a history lesson as well.
This was a show that didn’t require a set, just some tiered staging and spectacular lighting design with a wall of light, not only dazzling the audience but providing excellent silhouettes. This wall of light provided subtle soft lighting but the brightest of light as well, there was also low-level lighting as required and spot lighting. Having not seen the show before I can only presume that the lighting design was entirely the work of Rob.
Not to be outdone were the principals’ costumes, these were quite simply a work of art, great design, great colours and perfect fit. Cynthia Maxey has made this, her swan song, one of her greatest achievements in costume design and manufacture. Cynthia was supported by Debbie Nixon and then hair and make-up by Natalie Beare and Danielle Shippey perfectly finished the style and appearance of the cast.
The principals were greatly supported by a team of seven Ladies in Waiting whose costumes and choreography were equally as good, they were well rehearsed and had been clearly drilled by both Liam Nixon and Sam Rose, they clearly enjoyed their dance routines and were near perfect, enhancing the whole show.
This show revolves around the principals and their vocal abilities, their individual solos with their sassy strong voices and their confidence in their performance on stage, did not disappoint us. All the girls gave of their best in vocals and energy, their choreography also thrilled the audience. Plaudits indeed to Jasmine – Catherine of Aragon, Amelia – Anne Boleyn, Melissa – Jane Seymour, Lucia – Anna of Cleves, Daisy-Lu – Katherine Howard and Mia as Catherine Parr. I’m so glad that the director gave these six girls hand held mikes, these were so much more suitable than head mikes and became an integral part of the performance. Congratulations to all six, who from the audience’s perspective gave excellent performances. The response from the audience especially for the last two songs ‘SIX’ and ‘MegaSIX’ show how much the performances were enjoyed.
This excellent show had great support from the entire creative team so congratulations to them for all their hard work to truly bring this show alive.
