I had a most enjoyable visit to The Longton Players to see their production of “ Sitting Pretty” a dramatic comedy by Amy Rosenthal. I expected a well written play by this lady as she comes from a very theatrical background, her Mother Maureen Lipman and father Jack Rosenthal. I was not disappointed. This production, played in the round, was very amusing from the very beginning with all characters well delineated. Though very basic settings we had no doubts where the action was taking place. Mention should be made here of the excellent backstage crew who ensured all changes were made with slick efficiency and in fact they were most enjoyable to watch. The sound  and lighting department had a difficult mix of effects to contend with but as is always the case with this company, they succeeded without a hitch. Carole Quirke, Director, has been successful in making the transition from the usual Proscenium stage to this format and her cast coped admirably with this new experience. This is a piece that needs  some proficient female actors and Carole is fortunate to have two very versatile ones for this production.  Nancy, Nicola Hindley and Nina, her sister, played by Ann Dennis had the dominant roles and carried the other cast members at just the correct pace. Both characters had to run a range of emotions  and played their roles with finesse . Chris Hill as Philip was an interesting character as the artist in search of the ideal life model and apart from occasional stilted dialogue was perfectly believable. Max, Mike Stockley played the lonely, lovesick friend with just the correct amount of willing endeavour. The author would have been delighted with the way this talented company portrayed her very well written piece. Thank you for the warm welcome for my wife and myself.
