With some of today’s show being adaptations of well-known, recent fils (or vice versa) it is difficult for performers not to mimic the original version, and often audiences expect to see exactly the same looks and moves as the original. With the original being Whoopi Goldberg, it was refreshing to see the different interpretation from Gemma Collins (Deloris) in this production. She played the part perfectly, both as brash night-club singer and nun. Lynne Seagrave (Mother Superior), Eleanor Hainan (Sister Mary Patrick), Lynsey Hayes (Sister Mary Robert), Gillian Stewart (Sister Mary Lazarus), Gemma Davidson (Sister Mary Theresa), and Nikki Nairn (Sister Mary Martin) whilst shocked by Deloris’s actions at first, help out the subterfuge arranged by Paul Imrie (Eddie the cop) to hide her from brutal partner David Brown (Curtis) and his gang, Nathan Press (TJ), Ryan McMahon (Joey) and Jacob Chown (Pablo). Much humour and suspense as the nuns’ choir is coached, Deloris escapes for a while to a bar, followed by other nuns, the gang tries to find Deloris and eventually is caught for the murder Deloris witnessed. Allan Ayre (Monsigneur) is overjoyed that the Pope will hear the new, uptempo choir that is drawing hundreds to church services, against all expectations, and all is well at the end. I have to congratulate the chorus of nuns in their success in singing badly at the start — difficult for those who sing perfectly the rest of the time. I thoroughly enjoyed this production, as did the rest of the audience, (including the local priest sitting near me). With the Junior Section show in October and next March’s show booked, CMS is well on track to continue its success.
