This is a dream show for any society to perform – especially one, like KAOS, with a strong ladies chorus and equally strong principals. The book offers wide scope for female principals and plenty of opportunity for comedy.
In the leading role of Deloris Van Cartier, Jackie Beatson was quite superb, taking the Whoopie Goldberg character and giving it her own special characterisations. As the three “main” nuns, Sisters Mary Robert, Mary Patrick and Mary Lazerus played by Sarah Hugh, Kenna Orkney and Fiona Brodie were all excellent, each providing us with a completely different style of performance. In the Mother Superior, Monica Holland brought quiet dignity to the part. “Here, Within These Walls” being a case in point. Monica’s duet work with Monsignor O’Hara (Ian Davidson) brought out some of the wide array of comedy in the show. More comedy, thanks to some perfect timing, was provided by the three gangsters TJ (Andrew Doig), Joey (Clark Graham) and Pablo (Nigel Orkney). Together with Curtis (Michael McFarlane) their quartet numbers were extremely well performed and fun to listen to.
The ladies chorus, necessarily large in number for this show, performed well under the baton of MD Tom Wright, whilst Director, Alasdair Hawthorn provide his own blend of comedy and straight acting to further enhance a very fine performance of this show. I know some audience members would arrive expecting to hear the music from the film, however, in the stage show with music by Alan Menken and book by Cheri & Bill Steinkeller, I am sure they would be far from disappointed.
Sets, albeit large and heavy, worked well, with minimal change times between scenes. These, together with a colourful and glitzy array of costumes made for a most enjoyable night.
Well done KAOS!
