It’s not very often in my time of writing reviews of local productions that I have been able to use the words “triumph” and “outstanding” and other glowing remarks all in the same review but on this occasion I must say that Arbroath Musical Society’s production of “Sister Act” deserves every plaudit I can think of. The entire production was a triumph for the entire company and production team and the performance of Sara Whitton in the role of Delores Van Cartier/ Sister Mary Clarence was outstanding in every way her powerful voice was of the finest quality and her command of the stage and all her movements could not have been bettered. Her performance could have impressed on any West End Stage. This does not in any way detract from the performances of the rest of the cast. As I told them back stage, this wasn’t a show with principals and chorus, but a complete cast of principals. The comedy of the piece was in the very capable hands of the experienced Marlene Kear as Sister Mary Lazarus and Heidi Cathro as the ever-enthusiastic Sister Mary Pat6rick. The young Sister Mary Robert was beautifully acted and sensitively sung by Lousie Greenhill. The pivotal role of Mother Superior was excellently portrayed and sung by Susan Robertson and she was well supported by the ever-dependable Brian Boardman as Monsignor O’Hara. The males in the cast, though not kept as busy as the large company of singing nuns, were equally well cast with Jimmy Gray as the “baddy” Curtis Shank and his band of hopeless gangsters, Lee McLean (Pablo), Ryan Wink (TJ) and Garry Joss (Joey) more than made the most of what they had to do – the singing and dancing were top class!. Scott Ramsay was in control as Lt. Eddie Souther and all minor characters were equally well taken. Add to that the superb singing of the large company of nuns, a well balance nine-piece band excellent production and clever choreography and what the full houses every night enjoyed was a superb evening of musical comedy. Well done AMS and thank you for letting me join you.
