~~The Lyric pulled out all the stops for this production- perfect casting of principals, excellent chorus work, magnificent set and costumes – the whole works! Lynsey Craddock was outstanding as Deloris Van Cartier/Sister Mary Clarence with a both powerful voice and stage presence. Rhonda Scott’s Mother Superior was a masterclass in controlled exasperation, beautifully expressed in her rendition of “I Haven’t Got A Prayer”. Debbie Archibald as bubbly Sister Mary Patrick caught the over-enthusiasm of the character perfectly as did Rhona Johnston the shyness of young Sister Mary Robert, especially in her rendition of “The Life I Never Led”. Garry Watson as gangster Curtis was suitably menacing and moody, whilst Matthew Walker as his nemesis police officer Eddie Souther had everyone rooting for him in his quest to capture Curtis (and the heart of Deloris) with his rendition of “I Could Be That Guy”. Strong support was given by Andrew Begg (Monsignor O’Hara), Cath Munro (Sister Mary Lazarus), Ali Corbett, Ryan Peacock and Steven Reid (Curtis’s gang members Joey, TJ and Pablo respectively) and Rachael Watson and Sophie Hamilton (Deloris’s backing singers Tina and Michelle respectively). The singing and movement of the large chorus of Nuns and Acolytes was excellent and their performances of the full company numbers, especially “Take Me To Heaven”, truly raised the spirits and the roof. The whole production can be summarised perfectly in Deloris’s words – Fabulous, Baby!
