Hallelujah and praise be, this was a new show staged in this area, and what a most uplifting show it all was! It was vibrant, invigorating, and highly entertaining and had the audience applauding loudly at the show’s Finale. Marlowe Simpson made the transition from sassy night club singer (Doloris van Cartier) to Nun effortlessly and, in doing so, turned in a truly stunning performance as Sister Mary Clarence with ease and total confidence. Seasoned trouper Lynn MacFarlane was an exceptional Mother Superior and was the ideal choice for this role as she suited the part admirably. Then there are the many “character” nuns who all play their part in making the show a success – to name a few . . . Sister Mary Robert, played by young Rachel Weir; Sister Mary Patrick (Laura Ferrie); Sister Mary Lazerus (Lisa Tosh); and it is well done to all the remaining Nuns who, on first hearing their singing prowess, I’m sad to say (at that point), would never have made the Sound Of Music! The show is basically an all-woman show, but the men do have a look-in! Ewan McDyer was the “baddie” mobster as the gravel-voiced Curtis who shoots and kills a man, resulting in all the turmoil that follows. Confident Ross Lesslie played the local Lawman, Eddie, and his “I Could Be That Guy” number was cleverly staged and visually brilliant and Graham Mitchell played his Monsignor O’Hara role to perfection. All the big musical production numbers were very well staged and there was lots of glitter and glitz to the fore on show as well, which was seen to great effect in the show’s high powered Finale when everyone literally let their hair down as they sang and danced their hearts out in front of Pope John Paul (alias MD Paul Clancy). Rejoice, Downfield, this was a joyous night out and I loved it!
