Based on the 1992 film with a new modern disco inspired score by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater, the society embraced this lively fast paced show with much of the comedy set around Deloris Van Cartier, disguised as Sister Mary Clarence, attempting to inspire and develop the choral ability of a group of feisty nuns at the Convent of the Queen of Angels Cathedral while her ex-boyfriend Curtis and his mob attempt to settle a score with her. Fiona Webster was ‘Fabulous Baby’ in providing an outstanding performance as the disco diva Deloris demonstrating her versatility through drama and vocals. The self righteous Mother Superior was in safe hands with Carolyn Lowry. Her sister nuns were superbly performed by Carly Reilly as the naive Sister Mary Robert, Kathryn Parker as the more eccentric Sister Mary Patrick and Jenny Keegan cleverly characterising Sister Mary Lazarus with brilliantly delivered ‘one-liners’. Robert Taylor brought humour and reverence in his portrayal of Monsignor O’Hara, maintaining an Irish accent throughout. Liam McKinstray made an excellent shy and quiet “Sweaty” Eddie who eventually mustered up the courage to make his move on Deloris. Due to unfortunate circumstances, Liam was unable to take the stage on the Saturday performances and at short notice, Brian Toward stepped into the role. Andrew Davidson made a fine gangster Curtis Shank, supported by his mob; Lewis Milliken (TJ), Taylor Moyes (Joey) and Jamie Buchanan (Pablo) each portraying their individual characters well in the number, ‘The Lady in the Long Black Dress’. Other supporting principals included Kat Campbell and Suzanne Love as Sisters Mary Martin-of-Tours and Mary Theresa. Laura Johnston and Nicole Campbell played Michell and Tina with Mark Andrews cast as Ernie. The entire company performed to the highest standard with great energy throughout. Musical numbers were very well presented and brilliantly choreographed and directed around a great set with creative lighting. This fun filled production had plenty action and lots of laughs in what was a fabulous show.
