As a stand in reviewer I was welcomed warmly by the front of house staff.

This set the standard for the evening. A warm glow of pleasure pervaded through the audience as this lively fun filled musical started.

In the opening we saw Deloris, played to perfection by Fiona McRobbie. She set a high standard of singing and role interpretation which was matched by all the principals.

The shy, awkward Eddie (Scott McRuvie) won our hearts and Mother Superior (Jill Davidson) commanded the stage with confidence.

Then we have the ‘Baddies’! Curtis (Paul Campbell) gave a suitably sinister performance. His 3 sidekicks (Jacob Dudgeon, David Newton and Kris Mordente) delighted the audience with their clowning and their ‘Lady in The Long Black Dress’ number was especially memorable.

What can I say about our talented nuns. Well done ladies! All were well suited to their roles. Mary Robert (Jillian Finlay) gave a moving rendition of ‘The Life I Never Led’. Mary Patrick (Kiera Kessing) and Mary Lazarus (Lisa Gould) brought fun and laughter to the stage while Mary Martin-of-Tours (Jen Harris) and Mary Theresa (Gina Douglas) demonstrated excellent comic timing.

Finally a funky Monsignor O’Hara (Bruce Martin) completed the religious characters with humour and some sharp moves.

The company were in high fettle and their enjoyment in being part of this show was transmitted to all that were watching.

I especially liked the way that the company and backstage crew handled a sound issue in Act 1. These things happen in live theatre and it did not detract from the performance. A standing ovation at the end demonstrated this. Mention must go to all involved in this production. Production team (Ross Lesslie and Richard Waghorn), all working backstage, Sound provided by Accent Audio, Lighting supplied by Duncan Gillies, Costumes by Utopia and finally the simple but effective set provided with help from Downfield Musical Society. Well done Broughty.

I wish you all the best for your 100th year and I know that ‘White Christmas’ will be a worthy celebratory show.
