The film “Sister Act” has now been around for about 26 years and I am sure that Alan Menken had a mammoth task to equal the musical genre and songs of the original score. He has done a tremendous job and BROS were superbly able to execute the composer’s songs and Glenn Slater’s adapted dialogue.

Gloria Miller playing the part of Doloris was in excellent voice throughout the evening with her eight songs and her humour was well timed and ably portrayed. Her two sidekicks for the first two numbers, Tina and Michelle (Maddi Butler and Caroline Bennett) capably supported her with a tremendous vocal sound. Mother Superior (Helen Harries-Reece) and Sister Mary Robert (Amy Shury) had several solo spots and had well controlled and clearly enunciated voices which were required for their songs. My favourite song of the evening was Amy’s “The Life I Never Led” - beautifully and expressively sung and enacted.

Curtis (Mark Roberts), the baddie was well cast and looked the part together with his gang, Joe, TJ and Pablo (Miles Eden, Richard Millen and Warren Townsend). These three had some wonderful comedic choreography to perform in two numbers and did this to great effect. Adam Collins in the role of Lt. Eddie Souther, the law enforcement officer, acted and sang with conviction and David Bennett captured the chacacter of Monsignor O’Hara with convincing sincerity.

The complicated harmonies in the chorus songs which Alan Menken wrote were brilliantly performed by the rest of the cast and well supported by a 14 piece orchestra led by Musical Director, Matt Greaves. What was also very striking in this production were the sets - amazing backdrops for the convent cloisters, the Last Supper picture for the convent interior scenes and the sculpture of the Virgin Mary for the church service scenes. The whole show became a really polished performance and a very enjoyable experience. Congratulations to the cast, production team and the musicians for a great evening of entertainment.
