What a fabulous fun packed show. Starting with the Young Don (Georgia Potts) and Young Cosmo (Lola Ayrton) there was clearly going to be excellent dancing to come. Through the years Don and Cosmo showed us how they progressed to the film star and musical director.
Back to the age of silent movies we were introduced to the characters by Dora Bailey (Marilyn Mitchell) a radio reporter greeting the stars as they arrived, owner of the studio R F Simpson (Roy Greenwood), Roscoe Dexter (Johnny Kain) who only came into the part 2 weeks ago, which I learned after the show but didn’t realise during the show so well done Johnny). All these characters were portrayed very well.
Then came the main stars of the silent movie Lina Lamont (Samantha-J Armitage) who as soon as she started speaking had the audience laughing. An accent which was perfect for someone not suitable for the talkies and a change of personality later in the show when she laid down the law.
Don Lockwood (Tom Widdop) the male star of the movies and love interest of Lina in the film but not in life. And Cosmo Brown (Gavin Birrell) excellent singing and dancing by both these actors. Particularly in Don’s Singing in the Rain and Cosmo’s Make ‘Em Laugh.
Kathy Selsden (Leah Stansfield) The cake-filling, cake flinging girl Don actually loved despite the bad start to their relationship, saviour of the film company. Played beautifully by Leah.
Other cast members Zelda (Amy Jagger) Rod (Keelan Barrand), Sid (Simon Rothwell) Miss Dinmore (Helen Forsyth) Production singer (Christopher Williams) and all the Chorus and Dancers who danced, moved scenery seamlessly and sang, all made this the excellent show it was.
The scenery and costumes were colourful, the effects worked well and I thought the Singing in the Rain number with actual water was spectacular.
Special mention to the Production team Director (Kathryn L Beverly) Choreographer (Kimberley Williams well done for those company tap dancing numbers) Musical Director (Stephen Muir)
Well done to all concerned
