I was excited to see a classic musical brought to life by Loudoun Musical Society in their latest production, Singin' in the Rain. This much-loved show, known for its timeless songs and dazzling dance numbers, was given a vibrant and heartfelt staging that delighted the audience from start to finish. From the opening number to the final bows, the entire cast delivered a vibrant, high-energy performance that captured the spirit and charm of this beloved musical classic.

The principal roles were brought to life with enthusiasm and skill. The central characters of Don Lockwood (Jon McGill), Kathy Selden (Laurin Campbell), and Cosmo Brown (Stephen McIlwraith) were outstanding both individually and as a group, each displaying strong stage presence, vocal ability, and comic timing. John’s Don Lockwood gave charisma and vocal prowess anchoring the show, while Stephen’s Cosmo had high comedic energy and physical humour brining constant laughs. Laurin’s Kathy Selden provided both warmth, flawless dancing and vocal elegance, rounding out a well-balanced trio of leads. They were joined in the principal line up by the delightfully over-the-top and flamboyant Lina Lamont (Lynsey Campbell. Lynsey added further depth and humour to the production with great facial expressions, line delivery and a fabulous version of “What’s Wrong With Me?”, which was so cleverly done to make it sound so bad and have the audience in stiches.

Surrounding the leading roles, were a great cast of supporting characters including highlight performances from Douglas Wardrop as R.F. Simpson, Calum Peter as Roscoe Dexter, Sheila Fyffe as Dora Bailey and Fraser McKenzie as the Diction Coach, along with a dynamic ensemble who showed unwavering commitment throughout. Their collective energy, especially during large ensemble scenes and musical numbers, elevated the performance and kept the audience engaged from scene to scene.

Direction and musical direction were confidently handled by David McIlwraith and Matt Allison, ensuring a seamless flow between scenes and a consistently strong pace. The live orchestra added richness to the score, and the musical numbers were delivered with clarity and enthusiasm. A particular highlight of the production was the choreography. Cleverly staged and confidently executed, the dance numbers were both joyful and precise. The iconic “Singin' in the Rain” number was a standout moment—not only for its heartfelt performance but also for the remarkable technical achievement of real rain on stage. This effect, managed with great care and creativity, added a magical and memorable touch. The production also featured a creative and adaptable set, which transported the audience from film sets to Hollywood streets with ease. Coupled with atmospheric lighting, each scene was given its own distinct mood and visual style, contributing to the overall storytelling and helping immerse the audience in the 1920s setting.

In all, Loudon Musical Society’s Singin' in the Rain was a real treat. It was full of energy, heart, and creativity, and it was clear just how much hard work and passion had gone into every part of the production. The whole cast and team should be proud of delivering such a joyful and memorable evening at the theatre.
