This show has been one of my favourites since seeing the original London production many years ago and so I was delighted to be asked to see it performed by the talented and enthusiastic members of this youth group. Shelly Cunningham as Don Lockwood was excellent – a true song and dance “man” and she wasn’t a bad actor either! She was equally matched by Emily Grant as ingénue Kathy Seldon. Young Dylan Shearer as Cosmo Brown, in the words of his solo, certainly did “Make ‘Em Laugh” as did Emma Stott as bitchy diva Lina Lamont though she did bring out well the pathos in the character in her solo “What’s Wrong With Me?” Strong support was given by Hollie Cunningham (Dora Bailey), Bethany Grant (Zelda Zanders), Justin Green (R F Simpson) and Ellie Robertson (Roscoe Dexter). Highlights for me – Cosmo’s “Make ‘Em Laugh”, Don’s “Singin’ in the Rain”, Don, Kathy and Cosmo’s “Good Morning” and “Moses Supposes” with Don, Cosmo and Laura Beattie’s Diction Teacher. Singing and dancing by the chorus were excellent throughout. The use of a video wall to project the various locations ensured a seamless flow between scenes and was particularly effective in the “Singin’ in the Rain” Act 1 finale. Well done everyone for a most enjoyable evening!
