SINDERS
CATS never fail to conjure some new avenue to their presentations; this one-off performance was no exception. A two hour set-up window and then get out strip down after the show, put the pressure on the company, they nailed it.
It almost reads like the run tag for the Full Monty, For One Night Only; this however is a very different show, although, overcoming adversity and ending triumphantly whilst in various stages of undress do appear to be a common theme throughout both.
Bawdy - bô′dē Humorously coarse, lewd, or risqué, tick, tick, tick and tick. Sinders is a very, that’s extremely Adult version of pantomime favourite Cinderella.
I must state here for the record that I love the traditions of pantomime, having been grabbed by the Ghosties and Ghoulies a few times in the past myself. Pantomime, in all its gloriously unapologetic, un pc, multi-layered age presentation, appeals to all of the family in different ways.
This veered somewhat slightly from that tradition, less slap stick, more slap dick. It was vulgar, rude, crude, lewd, referencing and appealing to the lower base common denominator that affects us all SEX. I loved it. That base appeal was also its intrinsic charm. The audience eagerly joined in when required with gusto it must be said.
The completely over the top characters obsessed with sexual pleasure, or the lack thereof, were led by the Fairy Hanny, Dan Ede Smith; Sinderella, Lux DeLioux; Sluttons, Tim Ray; (Whose Hi Gang greeting reply is not repeatable here); Prince Charming, Rich Gilbert; Dandini, Jason Greenwood; The infamous ugly sisters, Fanny Hardon, Ian Wood; Danny Hardon, Sam Hughes-Johnson; all gave their all, in the ensuing, in your face, double-entendre laden smut fest which had the audience in absolute stitches.
Own goal alert… they missed, and how I don’t know, the obvious panto audience participation potential hilarity of “he’s behind you”. then again it would have added another ten minutes of gags, the show was crammed with loads of visual gags, a few saucy music numbers thrown in for good measure.
I can’t go into too much in-depth raw detail, it was basically salacious Cinderella, taken for what it was, a night of near the knuckle, in fact past the knuckle at times fun, extremely well received entertainment – In fact the CATS Meow … ha ah! (light bulb moment) Maybe Pussy in Boots next time.
