Shrek the Musical JR.
E.P.M.T.C Footloose
15/3/25
On my arrival at The Gladstone theatre for the matinee performance of this very popular musical, it was a hive of activity. The gathering of grandparents, parents, siblings and friends anticipating a fun afternoon.
Based on a book written by William Steig, with music by Jeanine Tesori and Lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek the Musical JR is based on the 2001 Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation Film. We are treated to the tale of Shrek by storyteller Alice Edwards /Hollie Pierce: King & Queen & young Princess Fiona, (Charlie Creer & Meg Pritchard & young Fiona Laila Dallen/Daisy Moore) who banish their daughter to a Castle guarded by a Dragon. Mamma & Papa Ogre & Baby Ogre (Heidi Hodgson, Dennis Boros & Daisy Drummond) who banish their son Shrek to live alone in a swamp Many years later Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairy tale misfits who have been cast off by Lord Farquaad. Freddie Dale excels as the titular Shrek with dry wit, charm and gentle assertiveness; while Sam Darker as the comic relief, Donkey, proves wholeheartedly why the character is a such a fan favourite. Scarlett Pinder as Fiona isn’t exactly the most conventional of Princesses, but exudes warmth, confidence and a little mischief in the role; and lastly Aiden King as Lord Farquaad certainly made his presence known as the undersize and overrated ruler of the land of Duloc. I hope hiis knees held out for the full run.
Director/ Musical Director Liz Legerton has put together a strong ensemble cast especially, the four main leads who deliver beautifully sung and wonderfully comic performances. Rob Stevens choreography was exceptional, getting the level just right for a mixed ability cast. Everyone on that stage gave of their best, this was very much a ‘team performance’ with every cast member contributing. Great set, lighting and sound was spot on, as were the wonderfully colourful costumes, congratulations guys.
Shrek, a hilariously grumpy ogre, agrees to rescue the Princess Fiona (Scarlett Pinder) so she can marry Lord Farquaad, and he will get his swamp back. Shrek reluctantly sets off to save Fiona with the hilarious talking Donkey. Fiona has lived almost her entire life locked high in a tower guarded by a ferocious dragon (Imogen McNeill). Scarlett Pinder gets most of the best tunes, as befits a fairy tale princess, and shines in a powerful trio ‘Story of my Life’ with the two younger Princess Fiona’s (Isla Scott & Rachel Horton). ‘I Know it’s today’’. The duet she has with Shrek ‘I think I got you Beat’ a show highlight for me. On their adventure, Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona all realise that appearances can be deceiving, and they learn the true meaning of friendship.
EPMTC Footloose have some outstanding young vocalist who could be seen and heard throughout the show, ‘Forever’. ‘Big bright beautiful World’ ‘Morning Person’ and ‘I know it’s Today’. As I said earlier this was a true team production, with such a large cast it is utterly impossible to mention individuals. Yet I feel I need to mention one performance, Pinocchio (Oli Irons) for his effort in this shall we say ‘cameo’ role, a perfect example of how to make the most of a smallish part! Well Done you were splendid. All of you on that stage today were amazing. Loved the finale, full cast ‘I’m a Believer’ as did the audience, all leaving the theatre very happy.
This was a delightful afternoon of musical theatre, E.P.M.T.C Footloose truly support and develop their young people. Long may it continue. Looking forward to the next production.
