Shrek based on the DreamWorks animated film of the same name is a real feel-good show and that is certainly how the audience left at the end of this production.
In the title role of Shrek, Mitch Scott-Bell, gave an energetic, thoughtful and engaging performance with good stage presence and a great singing voice. As Princess Fiona, Alice Sozzi was determined and sassy and her scenes with Shrek provided some of the comedy highlights. Again, her singing voice was a delight to listen to and blended well with principals and chorus alike.
As the larger-than-life character of Donkey, Ewan Archibald, gave an assured performance full of energy making the most of every scene and providing some great laughs along the way.
Lord Farquaad played by Adam Gibson may be short in stature, but he gave a towering performance ensuring every comedy moment was delivered with perfect timing.
As the voice of the dragon Kendra Laird had a voice well suited to the role. Special mention to the Young Fiona and Teen Fiona played by Aria and Macey at the performance I attended for giving us delightful performances.
The ensemble in this show play a range of characters – fairy tale creatures, guards etc and every single person should be incredibly proud of their performances that had clear characterisation and engagement throughout.
Direction ensured the show never faltered, choreography was slick and singing a joy to listen to. Staging and lighting along with fabulous costumes all added to the success of the production.
Congratulations to all involved for delivering a show of such high standard and making my first, and hopefully not my last, visit to SAMS such a joy.
