To celebrate Skipton Musical Theatre’s centenary the group’s production this year was “Shrek the Musical”. The show successfully blends humour for children with some wittier, more mature jokes for the adults, making it a good family outing.
The production, directed by Jay Cundell Walker, included an energetic cast which created a feel-good atmosphere both on and off stage. The large ensemble of chorus and fairy tale characters led by Laura Lipscombe playing an outstanding and humorous Pinocchio should be commended for their high energy, individual characteristics and strong movement, particularly the tap-dancing rats choreographed by Meryll Mohan-Hill.
Congratulations to Musical Director Michael Gilroy on a well-rehearsed vocal cast.
The principal line up was excellent with Martin McCulley playing the role of Shrek whose initially grumpy, solitary ogre whose character arc centres on overcoming his isolation and embracing connection and love. His dry wit and sarcasm, key parts of his character, provided many of the show's humorous moments, often contrasting with the boundless optimism of Donkey and the initial "perfect princess" facade of Fiona.
The Donkey played by Selina Pickles provided the fast-talking sidekick provided much of the show's physical comedy and vocal vibrancy. Donkey’s endless chatter and irrepressible optimism served as the perfect foil to Shrek's grumpy, solitary nature.
Princess Fiona, played by both April Green and Megan Conlon should be praised for their humour and vocal performance, and the Dragon played by Caitlin Owens whose powerful vocals were a showstopper. Congratulations also must go to Neave Conway – Young Fiona and Poppy Cain – Teen Fiona on both their acting and vocal performances.
One of the highlights of the show was Tobias Garbutt as Lord Farquaad the short-statured, narcissistic, and tyrannical ruler of Duloc who banishes all fairy-tale creatures and desires to marry a princess to become a king, played in a very camp, over-the-top, and flamboyant style, excellent humour, vocals and showmanship.
Congratulations to all the production team on an excellent show.
