‘Shrek the Musical’ proved to be a popular choice for Curtain-Up Productions this year and the audience were not disappointed. We were treated to a wonderful evening’s entertainment and it is always a bonus to hear a good live orchestra. The scenery was fantastic with some huge sets which were not without some technical issues but were soon sorted thanks to a hardworking stage crew. The costumes were outstanding and colourful with so many fairytale characters, not to mention the guards, dragonettes, rat tappers and all the various dancers.
There were some fine performances all round. Shrek (Rob Bishop) was a superb ogre with great energy, a good vocal and great delivery. Princess Fiona (Rosie Munyard) was perfect with a great voice, good diction and could dance too. Donkey (Nicola Law) was fabulous with great comedic timing, diction and vocal. One of the best I have seen in this role. A difficult part to play due to the physicality is Lord Farquad (Phil Jones) but he carried it perfectly with great delivery and a good vocal.
With a cast of so many it would be difficult to mention everyone but Pinocchio (Wesley Moxon) had great character and had a great falsetto voice. Another character with a strong vocal was Dragon (Sally-Ann Eaglestone-Stout). Everyone played their parts well with great conviction. The whole show had great energy with good company singing and great routines and the production team of Director Greg Snape, Musical Director Simon Percy, Choreographer Kirsty Channon and Stage Manager Phil Lynch are to be congratulated on bringing this show together. They have a great company to work with. Thank you once again Curtain Up for the invitation and I shall look forward to the next one.
