This very popular tale of Shrek, the misfit, was acted out by Walberton Players  junior section. By the time of the finale, we realise that no one is a misfit and every individual is important. The full version has a lot more dialogue and more songs but with the heart of the story still very much intact in the abridged version, it still makes it an ideal choice for a children’s production.

The title character, Shrek (George), had lots to sing and performed these well with clear diction. Fiona, the rescued Princess (Eleanor) also entertained us well with her four songs. One of them was a trio with her two younger selves and this was a most delightful scene.

The comedy came from a very enthusiastic Donkey (Oscar). He had much stage presence and provided many amusing scenes.

The Storytellers (Jemima and Grace) kept us up to date throughout the performance with their songs and dialogue.

Lord Farquaard (William) was well chosen and also provided us with some humour as although of small stature, had to think of himself as a giant of a man. Some very nice acting.

There were lots of opportunity for the ensemble to make their mark with so many scenes involving the fairy tale characters, Duloc performers, creatures, trees and rats. A salutary note to the costume team at this point for their expertise in clothing all these eclectic roles. I always find that although Walberton has a small stage, the extensions and way the stage is dressed with a central area and two side scenes on the added frontage help towards the smooth running of the scenes. It did so yet again here.

The choreography was well executed by the cast and the overall effect of the show was a “Big, Bright Beautiful World”. An absolutely delightful performance. Thank you to all involved.
