Taking a trip to the swamp with Spennymoor Youth Theatre Group's recent production of "Shrek" was nothing short of spectacular, showcasing the immense talent and dedication of its young performers. This vibrant and colourful rendition was a visual treat, leaving the audience thoroughly entertained and impressed.
The set design was a standout element, with a meticulously crafted backdrop that transported the audience straight into the heart of the fairy tale world. The attention to detail was evident, from the lush green swamps to the towering castle of Lord Farquaad. Complementing the set was the excellent lighting from Brightstar, which added depth and dimension to each scene. The creative use of lighting effects helped to enhance the performance, bringing the story to life in a mesmerizing way. The media wall was a masterpiece, it’s the 2nd show I’ve seen using these and they’re just so modern and slick – really made the difference. The town hall layout means you’re blessed with space and multiple exit points making all the difference with the large cast.
The costumes were another highlight of the production. Each character was dressed in bright, colourful attire that perfectly captured their personalities and roles as fairytale creatures. Most were made in house, well done to the costume team with a small supply from Utopia Costumes. From Shrek's iconic ogre outfit to Fiona's beautiful princess gown, the fairytale creatures and of course Lord Farquard which was nothing short of hilarious, the costumes were both eye-catching and authentic. The creativity and effort put into the design of each costume were apparent, adding an extra layer of magic to the performance.
The musical accompaniment was provided by a talented band adding a dynamic energy to the show, enhancing the overall experience. The band effortlessly captured the essence of each musical number, from the upbeat and lively tunes to the more poignant and emotional moments.
The performances by the cast were truly exceptional as one comes to expect under the guidance of Louise Defty and Megs Defty. Rhys Bye, as the Donkey, brought boundless energy and humour to the stage, delivering a performance that was both endearing and hilarious. His comedic timing and expressive face added a delightful charm to the character, making him a favourite among the audience and this part could have been made for him!
Equally impressive was Alfie Stephenson, the winner of the NODA Best Youth Performer 2023-2024 in the role of Lord Farquaad. Playing the diminutive and comically villainous character, Alfie commanded the stage with his presence and flair. His portrayal was spot-on, balancing the character's pompousness with a touch of humour that had the audience in stitches.
Harry Coles was excellent in the titular role of Shrek, playing a strong and comic character suitably decked out in the familiar green, supported by the beautiful Evie Stephenson as Princess Fiona. Abs Newman excelled as always as the Dragon, with Amy Gatland playing Ginger/Fairy Godmother, Chloe Armstrong playing Pinocchio and the versatile Jayden Nixon playing the Captain of the Guard.
In supporting roles there was Mils Cowan, Ava Norris, Naiomi Ritchie, and Scarlett Revell as Guards/Knights; Abs Newman, Peggy Dean and Henry Armstrong as the Bear family; Kaitlyn-Jane Todd, Abi Thompson and Lucy Edwards as the Three Pigs; Ella Rose McKenna, Isla Craig, Millie Payne as the Three Blind Mice; Aimee Thompson as Queen Lillian/Thelonious, Harley Mains as King Harold/Bishop, Ava Norris as Mama Ogre; Molly Baker as Papa Ogre; Finlay Johnson as Young Shrek; Willow Henderson as Young Fiona; Molly Barker as Teen Fiona and Ava Bowman as the Sugar Plum Fairy.
As most of you know as an ex-dancer, I do almost always keep an eye on the choreography and dancing a little more than anything else, and Megs Defty never disappoints. Age appropriate, well-rehearsed intricate numbers with beautiful finish have come to be expected and indeed received. I loved the dancing and routines in Shrek, they were literally almost perfection for me. Well done again Meg, and dancers Amy Gatland, Isabelle Addison, Ava Bowman, Elizabeth Chaney, Mils Cowan, Ella-Rose McKenna, Millie Payne, Abs Newman and Kaitlyn-Jane Todd, you were fantastic.
Making up the fairy tale characters were Emma Belshaw, Molly Barker, Kassidy Blackburn, Fleur Cheesmond, Elizabeth Chaney, Lexi-Rose Chester, Talia Cowan, Phoebe Cullum, Tabitha Daley, Max Davies, Peggy Dean, Emily Gilloway, Willow Henderson, Nicole Hajdu, Skyler, Lyle, Lucy Maddison, Abigail Meehan, Bella Payne, Emily Raw, Claire Riches, Charley Slee, Stella Thornton and Sophie Walters.
Overall, the Spennymoor Youth Theatre Group's production of "Shrek" was a resounding success. The combination of an excellent set, lighting, costumes, and live music, along with outstanding performances by the cast, made for an unforgettable evening of entertainment. This production was a testament to the hard work and talent of everyone involved, and it was a true pleasure to witness such a well-executed and colourful show. Well done team SYTG and I can’t wait to see you all again!
