Showtune is a celebration of the words and music of Jerry Herman.  The show consists of the songs from his shows, these include Mame, Mack and Mabel, Hello, Dolly! and La Cage aux Folles.

The show was originally conceived for a cast of 7, however David Walker and Hannah Long did a magnificent job of arranging the score for a cast of 20.  The harmonies on the group numbers were great and well thought out.

The setting was simple but effective, everyone being on stage made the show flow and it kept the pace fast.

Choreography was simple but again well thought out and all cast members were in time and to be honest I was impressed with what was achieved in a limited space.

With 20 cast members it is difficult to mention all cast members, however there were some notable performances to mention.

La Cage aux Folles is a classic with many classic songs.  ‘A Little more Mascara’ is a beautiful song that is challenge for any performer to get the meaning across, Elliot Bunker did a tremendous job with this song and the staging with the light bulbs was unique and clever.  Ben Austin and the company joined Elliott for ‘I am What I am’, a great version of a great song.

The duet of ‘I Won’t send Roses’ by Stuart Piddington-Wall & Sophie Walker was note perfect and beautifully put across.

Lucy Walker gave a good performance of ‘Gooch’s Song’ and this was followed by a tap perfect performance of ‘Tap Your Troubles Away’ from Mack & Mabel by Gilly Mackilligan.

Showtune is not a show that is performed often, but this is a show full of joy and wonderful songs and when performed like it was tonight it gives an audience a great night.

Thank you to the front of house team for their hospitality.
