An extremely talented group of 60 young people of varying ages and abilities presented a fabulous diverse programme of musical numbers from a wide range of musical theatre shows. This was a full on production.
From the opening ‘Another Op'nin', Another Show’ the entire company exuded a high energy level which never dropped throughout the production. The full cast really lifted the roof in big numbers like ‘Rhythm of Life’ with its impressive formations, ‘Fat Sam’s Grand Slam’ where skilled tap dancing was on display and ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’ which was dynamic and sounded fantastic.
There was so much for these youngsters to learn. Wordy songs, intricate moves and dance routines all looked so effortless and most importantly everyone looked as if they were having fun and enjoying themselves.
As well as big bouncy production numbers, there was a real variety of smaller ensemble numbers and solo numbers which were first class. It has been interesting to see how some of these young people have grown in confidence over the years. ‘Adelaide’s Lament’, ‘Mr.Cellophane’, ’Wait A Bit’, ‘Back to Before’, ‘Ireland’ and ‘Heart of Stone’ were just a few of the solo numbers which were delivered with real confidence and maturity.
‘Dancing Through Life’ with its excellent choreography was sung and danced beatifully. The older company’s rendition of ‘You Will Be Found’ was powerful and stirring.
I have mentioned only a few of the 39 musical numbers but it is absolutely true to say that every song and and dance routine was delivered with real conviction and enthusiasm.
‘Tonight Belongs To Us’ genuinely summed up the feelings and determination of these youngsters who gave it their all in presenting such a thoroughly enjoyable show. As always, the company’s ‘anthem’ ‘Beautiful Dreamer’ was sung with sheer joy and sincerity before the final ‘& Juliet Medley’.
I have great admiration for the production team who work with such a large, diverse group of young people enabling them to present such a fabulous show. It is so good to see young people encouraged to perform and enjoy music and dance while promoting the importance of team work and cameraderie and to know that the future of musical theatre is in good hands.
Very well done L.Y.
