The vocal talents of this company shone in this collection of best loved songs from some of their, and my, favourite musicals – from Porgy and Bess through My Fair Lady and Guys and Dolls to Aspects of Love and Mama Mia. There were many excellent performances in the programme, including some from members who do not usually play principal parts and also from two of the young members - Rachael McGregor and Michael Bremner. A few of the highlights for me were John Duncan’s rendition of “I Got Plenty of Nuttin” from Porgy and Bess, a poignant duet version of “Bring Him Home” by Christine MacKinnon and Iain McKenzie and a delightful “Love Changes Everything” from Aspects of Love by Michael Bremner and Rachael McGregor. Comedy was not forgotten with a hilarious rendition of Irving Berlin’s “Sisters” by Derek Brown and Jamie Stone, a marvellous “Adelaide’s Lament” from Kerry Russell and Sharon MacLeod and company’s laughter inducing “Honey Bun” from South Pacific. Company singing was excellent as usual – particularly in the “Finale” from Les Miserables and “On This Night of A Thousand Stars” from Evita. Each section was introduced by a different company member giving some facts about the show and composer ensuring there were no awkward pauses between items. As so succinctly put in the final item of the evening, once again, The Garrick Singers “Thank you for the Music”.
