My sister and I received a very warm welcome from members of Stourport Choral on arrival at the Civic Hall, in anticipation of the evening’s concert. The programme was an eclectic selection of musical and popular songs from a very mixed genre. It worked very well.
The opening medley from Phantom of the Opera was a showcase for the talented members who covered songs not normally included in a concert setting. ‘Think of me’ and ‘Angel of Music’ were particularly good. Unfortunately, there was a slight problem with the lighting which was quickly adjusted and made a great difference to the confidence of the performers who then treated us to a rendition of ‘Anthem’ which was beautifully balanced.
The popular songs had been carefully chosen and the choir did justice to them all, particularly ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ which was exceptionally good. It’s not easy doing Mama Mia and Jersey Boys medley’s, as we all think we know them until we get to sing them properly, but these were accomplished with great enthusiasm. The soloists did well especially as they were quite difficult songs.
I particularly liked the simplicity of ‘Up on the Roof’ and ‘Will you still Love me Tomorrow’ sung by members of the committee: very nicely done.
Highlights from the evening for me were the Jekyll and Hyde and Les Misérables medleys that whilst both challenging and fast paced were wonderful. The choir obviously has a great fondness for this selection, as they were so obviously sung with passion. The atmosphere during these numbers was electric and my fellow audience participants thoroughly enjoyed them. It was so hard not to sing along.
Thank you all for a very entertaining evening, it was my pleasure to attend on Bruce’s behalf.
