St Anne’s church was a perfect setting for this Christmas concert. The programme was well constructed with a medley of traditional songs and carols alongside some more modern upbeat numbers.
The strong choir and many talented soloists were all in very good form. There were some intricate vocal arrangements and harmonies which came across very well. The jolly numbers like ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’, ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ were sung with gusto and contrasted well with the more tranquil ‘Silent Night’, ‘Do You Hear What I Hear’ and ‘Mary’s Boy Child’ which is one of my particular favourite songs. There were too some very moving moments. ‘One Day I’ll Fly Away’ best known this year as the backing for the John Lewis Christmas advert was beautifully sung as was the emotive ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘ Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas'. The children in the audience seemed to particularly enjoy ‘Let it Go‘ form Frozen and ‘When Santa Got Stuck Up The Chimney‘. One number I had never heard before was ‘Text Me A Merry Christmas’ surely the most topical of all Christmas songs and a sure sign of the times. There were many more magical moments in this most varied and charming programme which was compered by A.J. who gave some interesting background information on each number and the performer in his own quirky, humorous fashion!
Mince pies and mulled wine at the interval ensured that this was a truly festive afternoon.
As always Showcase came up trumps with fine choral singing and many talented soloists who together delivered a most relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable concert which was a pleasure to attend. I left feeling festive and happy.
