My latest NODA visit was to St Margarets Church Hall, St Annes and the concert from Across The Boards Theatre School & Productions. This company ranges in age from what looked like four up to adults which are difficult to shoehorn into the same performance. This was a review type show, with many performances of music, dance, acting, and singing. They covered everything they could have with energy and a clear love for what they do. It was a very small space but the staff worked very hard and controlled the children very well - well done. Due to the size of the space, microphones weren't always needed however there were a couple of times where it would’ve been beneficial. Simple lighting was used and to be honest there was no need for anything else. There were some standout performances by a couple of the children, namely Olivia, whos vocals were far beyond her years and clearly an exciting talent to watch in the future. She sang one of my all time musical favourites - With You from Ghost and I have to say, she smashed it! Another performer Lola gave some very strong acting performances and her ability to switch from character to character from one performance to the next was outstanding. I would also like to mention Tia, who had some pretty gritty acting pieces which she took in her stride - well done. The program of acts was well thought out and suited the children and the abilities available - good job. There was a clever use of comedy and some very funny excerpts from different shows and plays keeping the audience thoroughly entertained throughout.
There was a lovely end to the evening with some award presentations for the younger students by the older students. Awards were given out for things such as gaining in confidence, a can do attitude and overall happy dispositions. There was also a sad note towards the end of the evening as the company said goodbye to their oldest student who was graduating and leaving the company. The whole evening finished with the whole cast and a couple of the audience members on their feet having a party!
The small performing arts School managed very well with the space and with the amount of students, they managed to put together a coherent and effective performance and I look forward to the next one.
