Shakers Re-stirred is a contemporary play set in the 1980s, exploring the working lives of four cocktail waitresses in a busy bar. Through sharp observational comedy and quick-fire character changes, the play highlights the pressures, frustrations and small triumphs of service-industry life, capturing both the humour and the grit of the era.
Directed by Jay Lucas, Tingdene Entertainer’s production of Shakers Re-stirred, was clean, confident and clearly well-rehearsed. The atmosphere was established from the outset, withthe cast greeting audience members as they entered the building, immediately placing everyone inside the world of the bar. Once the performance began, the cast - Charlene Clarke (Carol), Clare Patrick (Nicky), Heather Bambridge (Mel) and Alison Thomas (Adele) - worked as a cohesive unit, navigating multiple characters, accents and emotional shifts with impressive clarity and versatility. Despite the rapid transitions, the storytelling remained easy to follow, and the cast handled each character change with precision. There were many moments in the script where the timing was crucial, Charlene, Clare, Heather and Alison delivered these moments with ease, keeping the flow and pace of the performance.
The musical cues between scenes between scenes provided smooth transitions, guiding the audience from one moment to the next without interrupting the flow. The song choices were thoughtfully selected, each one reinforcing the 1980s setting and in keeping with the bar setting.
The costumes were uniformed, yet personalised with each character incorporating touches of their main character’s personality through their make up and accessories.
The lighting was vibrant and atmospheric, providing the feel of being in a bar. A single spotlight was used to draw focus to each of the characters when delivering their monologues, without disrupting the overall aesthetic.
The set and props were suitably chosen for the setting of the play, the space of the stage was well used, enabling the central space to be used as the Topshop changing rooms, supermarket and other locations without big scene changes slowing down the pace.
Overall, this was a well crafted, confidently delivered production. With a strong cast, thoughtfuldesign choices and a clear direction, the show offered an engaging and well-structured evening of theatre.
