Husband and wife John Godber and Jane Thornton have written a comedy about four cocktail waitresses, which on the surface may seem a rather trivial subject. As the play unfolds however we learn more of the hopes, dreams, mistakes and reminiscences of the four girls. We also found that the four actors took on a variety of other characters and personae, both male and female as the play progressed.
The set was minimal with good lighting and the props were moved at the appropriate times by the four actors. This was a roller coaster of a ride as the girls revealed more of their lives than we expected. Carol Pettinger had four talented and versatile actors to fill these physically and mentally demanding roles. The pace never faltered and the audience was intrigued by the different aspects of the piece which included monologues, snatches of song, choral speaking and mime. All on stage had a great rapport and worked so well together and Carol Pettinger is to be congratulated on the end result. I was particularly impressed with the well researched music, which was a nostalgic reminder of the eighties. It is very encouraging to see the number of younger people this company has at its disposal. Many societies I visit are struggling to attract new, young, actors but this company is obviously finding a way. I thoroughly enjoyed my evening with you. Thank you for making my wife and myself so welcome.
