Shotts upheld its policy of presenting new shows with challenging music and drama and again this year they pulled it off with a great line up of principals together with a strong chorus. The story of Seussical was broadly unknown to many but the company presented the wacky story brilliantly portraying characters created by Dr Seuss with musical numbers and great movement. A superb performance displaying great showmanship was presented by Darren Strang as the mischievous and comedic narrator ‘Cat in the Hat’. This was equally matched by Matthew Coulter who portrayed the caring and gentle Horton the Elephant. As Gertrude McFuzz, the loyal and loving bird neighbour of Horton, Chloe Edwards was very well cast as was Paula Kane as Maizie LaBird, a vivacious and vain bird. Joe Totten and Lesley Cook were well paired as the Mayor and Mrs Mayor of Whoville and were joined by Christopher Bell who played their son Jojo on the performance I attended. All other principles joined with them in performing to the highest standard. The production was cleverly staged with a great set to portray the story in the Jungle of Nool and the dust-spec planet of ‘Who’. The production team led by Judy and Fraser must be congratulated for bringing out the best in the company. Well done to one and all!
