Off we go for a colourful, happy night out to the Jungle of Nool. We’ll hear a magical cat, a talking Elephant, and a living speck of dust. Hey wait a minute what are you talking about? Sorry I was having a great visit to meet up with the boys and girls of Lothian Youth Arts & Musical Company. It was a very happy night for both audience and cast.
The magical Cat in the Hat was played by James Rennie. He took us through the crazy story helping Jo Jo. Corin Wake along his way to save all his friends the Hoo’s. His only contact is via an Elephant Horton played by Cameron Kilgore, who sang the part beautifully. His laid back approach to the character helped the audience really feel his concern at hearing the Hoo’s when nobody else could. With marvellous performances from Isis Hainsworth as Maysie, Maya Finlayson as Gertrude McFuzz and all the members large and small of the company joined in the trip and carried the audience along with them. James McCutcheon as MD led a well drilled orchestra and had obviously worked hard with the company in bringing the music of Stephen Flaherty, and the lyrics of Lynn Ahrews and Eric Idle to life. With very colourful costumes the look and presentation of the whole show was of a very high standard. I must give extra praise to the whole company when they managed to cope with the part power cut that happened just before the last 10 minutes of the show but once the power came back on they rallied and finished the performance. Congratulations to one and all for a fabulous evening.
