LAMP’s Children’s Theatre gives us a show that keeps you on your toes with its fast pace and nonstop singing. We are transported to the imaginative world of Dr Seuss with wonderful characters who demonstrate the human traits of kindness, mockery, loyalty and love.  Leading a cast of confident actors and fine singers, Catherine Bain as Cat in the Hat gave a polished performance exuding charm and mischief.  Just as accomplished were Alexander Gavin who showed flair and ability as loyal Horton the Elephant, engaging us and making us ‘think’ and Abbie Boles who gave her part as JoJo liveliness and determination.  Katie Rough, well cast as Gertude  McFuzz  gave us a kind and sympathetic  interpretation  reminding us that  getting your wish may not be what you want,  while Niamh Devery as peacocky Mayzie La Bird successfully showed that fantastic appearance is not everything.  Rosie Crawford as Sour Kangaroo and Lisa Bain as Young Kangaroo ably fulfilled their roles as nit picking baddies.  Looking the parts, adult roles of Mr and Mrs Mayor were clearly defined by Paul MacDonald and Daisy Mackie and Rona Miller gave a forceful and ruthless General.  Just as impressive were Annie Knox as Yertle the Turtle and Matthew Callaghan as the Grinch and Vlad Vladikoff. Meanwhile The Wickersham Brothers nicely captured the mannerisms and movements of monkeys, Mayzie’s Birds were amazing and the Jungle Citizens, Cadets and the Whos all performed well. The whole cast gave their best, and enjoyment for what they were doing shone through. Singing was characterised by clear diction and the musicians supported the young voices sympathetically. Roles were well cast, movement was assured and precise, and costumes were bright and cheery. The relatively simple set blended into the storyline and was enhanced by effective lighting. The fact that everything seemed effortless was a tribute to the production team. Well done on a successful and very enjoyable show.
