Written by Stephan Flaherty and Lynne Ahrens, Seussical the Musical Jr. takes us on a journey of friendship, loyalty, love and acceptance. Stories brought to life with vibrant energy and creativity, the talented cast of Clydebank Musical Society captured the essence of the imaginative stories and characters right from the start. The story is narrated by The Cat in The Hat, and played by Michael Craig, he brought great energy throughout the production displaying a wide range of skills and abilities. In the role of Horton, Ben Baldasara showed us a lovely kind-hearted side throughout the performance. Jojo was played by Adam Cobey, and I particularly liked his performance in It’s Possible, and Alone In The Universe. This is a bright and colourful show and introduces us to many characters along the way each adding to the tapestry of adventure, friendship and power of imagination.

Mayzie was played by Elise Whyte and along with the six bird girls and Iona Henderson, in the role of Gertrude, brought a great performance of Amazing Mazie, and Gertrude was excellent in her song The One Feather Tail of Miss Gertrude McFuzz. In the roles of Mr Mayor and Mrs Mayor were James Boyce and Erin Fitzpatrick and they both showed a high level of performance in How To Raise A Child. There were a number of supporting principal roles including General Schmitz played by Struan Welsh, Yertle played by Morgan McCabe, Archie Myall as The Gringe, and Hollie Sharp as Vlad Vladikoff, Lexie Anderson as Sour Kangaroo and Keir Cameroon as Small Kangaroo. All performed to a high standard and brought impact to the overall production. Thing One and Thing two were played well by Iona McQueen and Melody Ramsey. The Wickersham Bros, Abigal Latham, Kyle McPheely, Mollie Wilson and Euan Reid added a bit of mischief, but not in a bad way! It was good to see a large ensemble getting involved in all the fun and action and working hard with great enthusiasm as a team.

The production team ensured imaginative stories were brough to life through singing acting and dance. It was very apparent that a lot of hard work had gone into this production and along with the cast credit should be given to the creative team. The director, Jamie Lee Aitken ensured the importance of the visual storytelling, with bright and lively choreography by Iona McHugh. The singing was excellent, and Mari Warren, Musical Director, ensured there was a great balance between the band and the stage. I think it’s fair to say that the all-important message of friendship, loyalty, love and acceptance really came across in this production. As always, a very warm welcome greeted us when we arrived at the theatre. Clydebank Musical Society work tirelessly to ensure every opportunity is given to young people as they start their journey into musical theatre, and their enthusiasm and commitment shine through.
