This play was a marathon task for cast and backstage crew alike. A total of 24 scenes listed in the programme including a most effective duel scene. Due to the long cast list some members were playing more than one role and the play demanded 100% concentration from the audience to make sure they did not get the characters mixed up which would have made nonsense of the story.
Well done to Director Louise Farmer and the cast that this did not happen. Changes of costume and demeanour kept the characters clearly defined.
It was an entertaining play in typical Jane Austen style of romance and realism with the penniless family, the cheating half brother and moving house to a cold cottage. Add to this the arrival of a handsome stranger and you know that despite the ups and downs it will all end happily.
This version had been adapted by Jessica Swale for the premiere at the Watermill Theatre.
An entertaining evening for the audience but an exhausting one for the members of Grange Players. Well done.
