It is always a great pleasure to be invited to listen to the ladies of the Saltburn Songsters. This talented group radiates a genuine love for their craft, and it shines through in every note they sing. Their performance was a heartfelt display of passion, dedication, and vocal artistry.

Set in the idyllic surroundings of Emmanuel Church in Saltburn, the evening was made even more special by the venue’s stunning acoustics, which perfectly showcased the group’s harmonies and musical expression. The ambiance added a magical touch to an already enchanting performance.

Under the expert musical direction of Dan Matuszak and with the accompaniment of Gillian Ash, the evening unfolded into a spectacular showcase of beautiful songs and delightful entertainment. From start to finish, it was clear that this was more than just a concert, it was a celebration of music, community, and joy.

The opening number in Act One showed the versatility of the ladies as they delivered 'Save the Day' from Newsies the Musical, with beautiful harmonies which were well delivered.

Next came the elegant 'Ascot Gavotte' from My Fair Lady, as the ladies transported us to the races with impeccable poise and charm, delivering the piece in perfect English accents that added a delightful touch of authenticity and wit.

Raising the tempo, we were treated to a vibrant trio of Motown classics that had the audience swaying along. The ladies brought infectious energy to 'Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch,' followed by  'Ooo, Baby, Baby,' and wrapping up the set with a rousing rendition of 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours.

There are many beautiful numbers in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, but the ladies’ rendition of 'Hushabye Mountain' was truly special. With its gentle vocal crescendos and rich harmonies, it was a perfect choice for their choral group, showcasing both their technical skill and emotional depth. The next number, made famous by the Military Wives Choir, was the deeply moving 'Wherever You Are.' The ladies delivered it with warmth and heartfelt emotion, their voices blending beautifully to convey the song’s message of love and connection. It was a touching moment that clearly resonated with the audience. Sheila Blair added a lovely touch to the next musical number, providing a great accompaniment on her guitar for 'With a Little Help from My Friends.

Blood Brothers is a powerful and emotionally charged musical, and the ladies’ rendition of 'Tell Me It’s Not True' certainly didn’t disappoint. Delivered with softness and deep feeling, their performance captured the raw emotion of the piece, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. To conclude Act One, we were introduced to a special guest, Mollie Shellard, who reprised her role as Deloris Van Cartier. She was joined by Catherine Ing, Karen Robers, Mel Robers, Jenny Ash, and Anne Davis, and together supported by the full chorus of ladies they delivered a fantastic medley from Sister Act. The energy was electric, the harmonies tight, and the joy infectious. A particular highlight was my personal favourite, 'Raise Your Voice,' which brought the first half of the evening to a rousing and uplifting close.

Act Two opened with a burst of energy from the iconic theme number from Little Shop of Horrors set the tone for an engaging and eclectic second half. This was followed by a beautifully rendered performance of Sting’s timeless ballad, Fields of Gold, which brought a moment of heartfelt stillness to the audience.

Injecting a delightful dose of humour and charm, the ladies took to the stage with kazoos in hand for a playful rendition of the Lennon and McCartney classic “All You Need Is Love” which had the audience smiling and tapping along.

The scene then shifted to Argentina with “High Flying Adored” from Evita, this number stood out as a highlight of the evening, showcasing not only the emotional depth of the piece but also the remarkable vocal talent of the ladies.

The ladies delivered a heartwarming VE Day celebration medley that truly captured the spirit of the occasion. With the audience waving their flags and joyfully joining in, the performance featured beloved wartime classics such as Kiss Me Goodnight, Sergeant Major and It’s a Long Way to Tipperary. The medley concluded with a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, bringing the audience together in a moment of pride and reflection. It was a touching tribute that celebrated both musical heritage and community spirit.

Sheila Blair once again took to her guitar to accompany the ladies in a heartfelt rendition of Let It Be, adding a gentle, acoustic charm to the performance. The energy then shifted as the group was joined by Mollie Shellard, with vibrant support from Sam Soul, Julie Marshall, Corran Thyn, and Jenny Ash. Together, they transported the audience to Baltimore with a lively and colourful medley from the musical Hairspray. Highlights included Good Morning BaltimoreI Can Hear the BellsMama, I’m a Big Girl Now, and Hey Mama. Their dynamic performance brought a burst of joy and theatrical flair to the stage, delighting the audience with every note, well done Mollie and the Ladies it was a truly lovely melody.

The concert drew to a close with what has become the Saltburn Songsters’ signature piece, Why We Sing. This moving and powerful number served as a fitting finale, encapsulating the spirit, unity, and joy that had filled the evening. It was a wonderful conclusion to a truly beautiful concert.

A huge well done to each and every performer, musician, and supporter involved in creating such a memorable night. The talent, passion, and camaraderie on display were inspiring. I, for one, can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2026 as the Saltburn Songsters celebrate their 20th anniversary, an exciting milestone for a remarkable group.
