Secondary Cause of Death the second of a trilogy of plays by Peter Gordon. The Players performed the first in the trilogy, Murdered to death, in 2010. The play is set in early Spring 1939 at Bagshot House which has been opened for discerning guests by Colonel Craddock. All of the action takes place in the library. Most of those gathered are intent on attracting the wealthy, ageing manor owner but many are not what they seem. The playwright, Peter Gordon, has very cleverly created this trilogy in the style of a spoof on Agatha Christie whodunnits. The writing is hilarious with very clever use of language.
The well-crafted production was extremely well received by the audience. The crew are to be congratulated on the very effective set and smooth running of the production. The cast are to be highly praised for maintaining the atmosphere of the hotel whilst dealing with strange disappearances and evidence of murder. From European Count to lisping female army captain, from Lady Isadore to Nurse Parsley and from ham actor to murder mystery organiser they were all exceptionally well cast and executed their roles impressively.
All the cast were irrepressibly linked to the arrival of the hilariously dim-witted Police Inspector Pratt, played superbly by Graeme Cooper, who described the character in his biography as the “multiple-metaphor-mangling and constantly error-prone Inspector Pratt. The play may be called a Secondary Cause of Death but this production was definitely a “Primary Cause for Laughter”.
