This big hearted feel good factor family musical promises to bring smiles and cheerfulness to those fortunate enough to secure tickets for the remaining performances of this most entertaining show. Certainly based on the applause and response from opening night of a production which could never be described as “Humbug”!!.
A strong and rousing opening chorus ‘M.O.N.E.Y’ and ‘I Hate People’ swiftly introduced most of a multitude of characters in a story which tells of ‘Scrooge’s’ transformation from loathsome individual to a man of enormous generosity.
‘Ebeneezer Scrooge’ played brilliantly by Paul Robinson from his first utterance portrayed the role with aggression and compassion at appropriate stages but with a unique likability. Vocally too his performance was convincing and powerful. Ian Thompson as ‘Bob Cratchet’ was every bit the impoverished caring family man
Tam Weir with great humour gave an accomplished performance as ‘Tom Jenkins’ and ‘Mr Fezziwig in song and dance showing precise agility and purpose in the songs ‘ ‘December 25th and ‘The Milk of Human Kindness’. His leading the company in a rousing rendition of “Thank You Very Much” was a real treat.
The direction and production Tony Catchpole and Steve Carley applied was innovative and varied and coupled with delightful chorography and inspired dance routines moved the whole story along with pace and energy. Dave Fuller played ‘Jacob Marley’ extremely well in wonderfully ghostly make up. Ella Sutton as ‘Ghost of Christmas Past and Gordon Lush as ‘Ghost of Christmas Present’ helped effectively progress this cheery Dickens based story
There were strong supporting roles. Worthy of a mention was Harry Ryan (Harry/Young Scrooge’) and Penny Ashmore (Helen/Isobel) singing “Happiness”. Unfortunately it is not possible to give a mention to all on stage though the contribution they made was pivotal in helping create this excellent production.
The whole company appeared in a variety of vibrant costumes including the magnificent ghostly portrayals with appropriate make up. Highly effective lighting and stage effects and props including a huge ‘turkey’ were a pleasing enhancement.
Many of the songs though not very well known were performed robustly and adeptly by principals and ensemble alike with live orchestration well balanced for those on stage. Giving the audience a most enjoyable evening and well done to all involved at the Norbury.
