This year’s show was under new management, in other words, a completely new production team who brought a show with a very modern touch throughout and a new freshness to its content. The Opening was in true Ralph Reader tradition as the Gang introduced themselves to the audience and then we moved on to the modern part of the show containing comedy sketches and big musical production numbers – one of the many highlights being the First Half Finale tribute number to America. One of the show’s funniest moments occurred in true Gang Show fashion in the “Synchronised Swimming” item which brought forth a barrel of laughs as the male performers went through the motions of swimming in formation “hidden” behind a screen of blue material representing the swimming pool. This was ingenious in its conception and a cracking traditional GS item. The “Electricity” number certainly came alive when a young boy soloist, backed by two dancing females, performed in front of a lit back screen of lights crackling with electrical charges. “Scotpop” saw the Gang all clad in tartan paying tribute to the Bay City Rollers and ending with a young Scout piper entering through the audience playing the bagpipes to join the Gang on stage in a fitting and powerful Scottish Finale. More entertainment was in store in the “Beatlemania” and also in the romping-stomping, beautifully choreographed “Country & Western” number. It was well and truly Youth to the fore in this show and it is now onwards and upwards since, next year, the Gang celebrate their Golden Jubilee. Looking forward to that!
