It was a pleasure to witness a master class of a performance by Geoff Dale as Scaramouche, in this solo play of that name. He had fashioned his alter-ego’s sad and tired, centenarian character perfectly. We were drawn into the tale of this white-faced clown’s life and the episodes that had added the layers of white grease paint to his ‘traditional’ white face. Each revelation was a self-contained tale of pain, loss, love, lust, and man’s inhumanity to man, survival and exhaustion. Geoff was word perfect, paced and spellbinding. He held and filled the space for the whole of his performance.
Director – Michael Amerstorfer had directed his actor very well. It was clear that each step had been meticulously planned, each nuance practised to maximise a performance that demanded attention for the duration of the play.
Set design (Frances Knight), construction and technical team produced the complimentary dressing room set, understated and functional. The fabric of the circus tent drapes, the changing lighting and incidental music worked well to re-enforce the mood of the piece.
Congratulation go out to The Lindley Players for having the breadth and depth of talent that enable you to tackle such an excellent and broad range of entertainment. Always a pleasure to visit.
