This show from the play by Alan Parker and with music and lyrics  by Paul Williamson was originally written for the cinema in 1976. This was then adapted for the stage in the 1980’s and has been very popular ever since.

This fast and furious show has enabled young actors to step into the limelight and to put their own interpretation on the basic story-line.

Beverley Yates, having directed this show in 2005 had been invited to direct this 2018 Production.

The Production Team is to be congratulated on giving the audience a night to remember as this energetic, colourful and entertaining show came to life on stage. Musical Director, Wayne Oakes brought out the best of performances from a very young group of actors who showed confidence and enthusiasm. The talented orchestra set the mood and ensured the correct sound balance.

I did feel that the young cast should have been instructed to project more as at times they relied on the use of microphones, too much.

The set was well designed and constructed with an additional playing area, stage right for additional focus. Congratulations to the stage crew for slick changes and to members of lighting and sound teams for enhancing the on stage action.

The 1920’s period costumes, makeup, hairstyles and accessories had been well researched and added to the authenticity of the piece.

The two “ Gangs “ headed by “ Fat Sam “ and “ Dandy Dan “ enjoyed using the very effective Splurge Guns and Custard Pies mirroring the real life exploits of gangsters in Chicago and New York.

Oliver Grindrod as Bugsy Malone held the stage confidently. Laura Tingle as Blousy Brown gave a sensitive performance whilst Ruby Thompson enjoyed her role as the scheming and manipulative Tallulah. Thomas Foyle as Fat Sam gave an energetic performance and Ryan Beardsworth as Knuckles was completely immersed in his role and is certainly one to look out for in the future. The highlight for me  was the lovely performance by Alice Bashora-Guyo as Fizzy who captured the essence of the character and gave an outstanding rendition of “ Tomorrow ”, showing all her many talents. Jennie Barnes, Choreographer had worked hard to create the atmosphere of the era. Chaperones and Dressers ensured the smooth running of this Production.

There was a great, positive, Audience reaction, which must have delighted all on stage.

Thank you for your very warm welcome.
