Rumpelstiltskin The Panto.- OLSS Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society- 30.11.2019

This was an Original Pantomime written by Award Winning Leo Appleton and Rob Fearn and I was looking forward to my visit to see the latest offering by this talented Society. I was certainly not disappointed.
As the performance began there was a great atmosphere already in this attractively decorated venue.  The show opened with a very lively opening number with a beautifully dressed cast and as the story progressed the audience, both children and more mature, were soon engrossed. Leo Appleton as Madam Miller soon had the audience on his side as he persuaded them to get involved in the plot. Leo makes a very believable, professional Dame and works with the audience so well.
Members of the ensemble gave the impression that they were all thoroughly enjoying their part in the performance. They moved well in all the routines and Pauline Hardie, Musical Director, must have been delighted with their splendid singing. Amy Appleton’s Choreography was just what was required. Her dancers looked lovely and danced beautifully.  There were some very good characterisations among the Principal roles. I particularly enjoyed Rob Fearn as the evil Rumpelstiltskin. His experience ensured that he brought the most out of his well-defined character. Lola Donegan Fearn, Joe King, used the playing area well and delivered her many lines with excellent diction. Sarah Rouse, Sergeant Cringe and Sofia Hardie as Corporal Cower were outstanding. Their work together as the King’s Guards was very funny. They were never out of character and soon endeared themselves to the audience.  All on stage contributed to a very enjoyable evening. I must congratulate the Costume Department for the lovely outfits. Diction and Projection were very good and Sound and Lighting excelled. I moved to various parts of the venue during the evening and I could always hear every word. The Band, under the Direction of Angie Strickland was an essential part of the success for this talented Society. Well done to Director, Rosie Withers who had used all her experience to create a feel-good factor.  The audience left for home knowing that Christmas had really begun.
