The original American version ‘ Rumors ‘ written by the acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Neil Simon premiered in1988 at The Old Globe Theatre and moved to Broadway later. This successful play has since been adapted for the British Stage, which sets the action in London in the present. It was a bold choice by St Ambrose Players as this was a complex script, creating a challenge for a dedicated cast and Production Team. The experienced and talented Director, Jean Karran has worked determinedly to interpret the excellent script and has brought out the best from each cast member.
The characters were well delineated and many audience members were able to identify with the believable traits and personalities of each role on stage. Their frustrations and feelings were very well identified and the cast all worked hard to bring the various characters to life.
The curtain opened to reveal a realistic looking living room in mostly monochrome with additional red features as a contrast. Congratulations must go to Set Designer and Constructor Graham Forrest and his team for a solid and beautifully constructed set, which was well dressed with appropriate furnishings and props. Lighting and Sound by Stephen Porter was an essential part of the production. This was particularly relevant when the ringing telephone was used constantly and the headlights of vehicles, (with accompanying engine noises) were seen through the window.
The cast worked so well together with their hilarious cover-ups and unlikely far-fetched stories and I hesitate to mention any individuals. With this in mind however Alison Griffiths- Barnes gave a very mature, measured and convincing performance with excellent comic timing and bringing out the most from her very funny lines. Joan Watkinson as Cookie Cusack was completely immersed in her role and in my opinion gave her best performance to date.
In Act 1 Ian Spencer appeared a little hesitant and nervous but in Act 2 gave a brilliant explanation of events, which quite deservedly, received an ovation from the appreciative audience. This young actor improves with every new challenge. Sarah White as Claire Cummings showed her experience and versatility as she confidently moved around the playing area, again showing great comic timing. Director, Jean had quite clearly thought hard and long about this production and she has ‘ choreographed ‘ each scene to a very high level. Diction and projection were excellent and Jean has ensured facial expressions, hand movements and body language were just what was required.
The costumes and accessories were especially effective against the light c;assic set.
I did think that the final curtain would have looked better with the actors taking their bows from their positions at the end of the final scene rather than the usual line-up.
I must congratulate all involved in this latest offering by this very talented company. Thank you for making my wife and myself so welcome.
