Ruddigore was the ninth collaboration between Gilbert and Sullivan and has proved, since its opening at the Savoy Theatre in 1887, to be one of the most popular.
There were good principal vocals throughout with Margaret Askam in fine form as Dame Hannah and Jean Mason as the fickle Rose Maybud. Les Plimbley played Robin Oakapple with a slightly comical slant and was ably supported by Helen Blatch as Mad Margaret and Mike Tebbutt as Richard Dauntless. Together with Mike McGhee , Paul Blackmore. Margaret Blackmore and Gill Neilson, the principal line up performed their roles to great effect. The singing from the chorus of “Professional Bridesmaids” and the “Murgatroyd Ghosts” was of a high standard, with simple movements throughout. An overall enjoyable evening with a very competent orchestra. Good to see the Society settling in at the Duchess Theatre.
