This is one of my favourite G&S operettas and I haven’t seen it for a number of years so I was looking forward to this production. I was not disappointed as from the overture under the direction of Oliver Longstaff, the orchestra were in top form.

The first act was set on a colourful seafront with just as colourful costumes particularly the Bridesmaids. They filled the stage with their lovely harmonies and dancing despite being fed up at having no weddings to attend. A majestic Dame Hannah (Jean Krzeminski) told the story of the curse which affected the Murgatroyd family.

Coming onto the scene a fickle Rose Maybud (Helen Fieldsend) with a powerful voice and excellent acting with comedy timing when referring to her little book. She was in unrequited love with Robin Oakapple played superbly throughout as Robin and when revealed as Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd by Graham Weston, gaining every bit of comedy from both roles and directing the Show.

Robin’s loyal servant (Bobbie Greatorex) also amused the audience with his antics.

We meet a sailor Richard Dauntless (Dan Metcalfe) who turns out to be a foster-brother of Robin and dances The Hornpipe and double crosses him by trying to steal Rose and revealing that Robin is really Ruthven.

Mad Margaret (Janice Rendel) entered in a tattered wedding dress and untidy hair also had very good comedic talent and a good singing voice was jealous of Rose. Her husband Despard Murgatroyd (Anthony Noden) had a deep sonorous voice were delighted to no longer have to commit a crime a day finally deciding to use Basingstoke to reign her in when required.

The second act was set in Ruddigore Castle and was dark and atmospheric. The picture gallery on the walls turned during a short blackout to reveal the Murgatroyd Ancestors Ghosts. The costumes were very good and the singing of Painted Emblems of a Race led by Roderick Murgatroyd (David Parker) was excellent and much appreciated by the audience.

It all ended well with a wedding which pleased the Bridesmaids.

There was good vocals through the whole show from all the cast and I really enjoyed the performance.

Congratulations Graham and well done to all involved.
