This production got off to a very amusing start as the overture accompanied a brilliant silent film of the history of the Murgatroyds. The silent movie theme continued with the entrance of the bridesmaids, dressed as zombies. It all seems rather weird, but the theme, with white faces and dark lips and rather stereotype over large gestures, worked very well. “Ruddigore” has such a silly, convoluted plot that a few extra complications only add to the fun.
Shaun Dodimead and Lisa Axworthy (Robin and Rose Maybud) were a lovely couple and David Tatnall and Vicky Dodimead (Sir Despard and Mad Margaret) were well matched too. David Putley was a jolly Richard and Carole Lilly was quite commanding as Dame Hannah. Keith Wiggans was a very doddery Adam and Rebecca Woodhead was a rather scary Zorah. Mick Attwood (Sir Roderic) gave us a very clear version of the super “When the night wind howls”.
All the principals sang well, Lisa’s voice being particularly beautiful. The trio “My eyes are fully open” was fantastic. It must have been the fastest version that I have ever heard! “There grew a little flower” was beautifully sung by Hannah and Sir Roderic but every number was well performed. The dialogue was brilliant with every word clear and the timing was good throughout, so that every laugh was taken.
The ancestors were in good voice and were very amusing in their picture frames. The bridesmaids, members of the youth theatre, were super, skipping and jumping all over the place with great enthusiasm. The chorus sang admirably too, although they did not have a great deal to do.The costumes were excellent and very good quality and the set was simple but effective, especially for Act II, with good lighting. The orchestra played very well under Nigel Finch’s direction. At times they were a tiny bit too loud but overall the lyrics were very clear.
This production was a joy from start to finish, with super singing, first rate acting and a rather quirky setting. I really loved it and David and all the team must be congratulated on such a splendid show.
