~~ This was an interesting play with lots of twists and turns. Roleplay by Alan Ayckbourn was directed by David Balfour. With an excellent cast that kept up the pace in this comedy and with a great set and sound effects, we were in for a treat.
The play is set in a riverside apartment in London’s Docklands with a young couple Justin (Steve Davis) and Julie-Ann (Emma Davis) running around getting stressed as they try to get the flat sorted before the arrival of their parents, Julie-Ann’s straight-laced mum & dad, Derek (Bill Walsh) & Dee (Di Buck) and Justin’s posh boozy mum Arabella Lazenby (Stevie Parker).
Julie has misplaced a desert fork and goes into melt down as she wants this evening to be the best as everyone is meeting for the first time, and with boyfriend Justin about to set the date for their wedding rushes out to the shops to get a new one.
While she is out, Paige a gangster’s girlfriend superbly played by (Michele Arkle) drops in, well falls onto the balcony to escape confinement from the flat a few floors above. Justin suggests she warms up and she gets changed into Julie-Ann’s dress, her minder Micky excellently played by (Phil Rainforth) lets himself in and tracks her down. She refuses to leave with him as she fears for her life from her boyfriend. Micky is not going anywhere and shows his gun so they both decide to stay to dinner.
Julie-Ann returns to find Paige in her dress, Justin’s mother turns up drunk and insults Julie-Ann passes out and misses the food. Lots of funny moments lead to the ending of the play as Micky decides that they should both escape and he leaves with Justin’s mum, and Paige goes off with Justin, leaving Julie-Ann and her parents with a gangster banging on the door looking for his girlfriend.
Everyone played their parts very well and the audience loved every minute. I had a very enjoyable evening.
