An exuberant cast of 93 youngsters from age 8 upwards wearing brightly coloured tops burst on to the stage and set the scene for this whistle stop musical tour round the world. Starting off in Europe then travelling to Australia, America, Africa, Asia and finally fantasy places, the selection of musical numbers pertinent to each country was diverse and captivating. There are so many talented youngsters in this company and what was so striking was how self assured and confident soloists, small ensembles and indeed the entire cast were on stage.
With so many youngsters given the opportunity to sing solo and so many musical numbers it would seem unfair to single out individuals. Suffice to say that the quality of singing was tremendous with many accomplished performances which blew me away. The choreography too was most impressive. The Irish dancing, tap routines in ‘42nd Street’, show girls in ‘Copacabana’ Egyptian dancing, ballet and American street dancing were all very well performed with style and panache.
This entire production oozed enthusiasm and precision by a cast who were incredibly disciplined paying great attention to detail both vocally and in movement. The sound effect created by clapping, clicking and stamping in Africa was most effective.
As well as excellent solo and ensemble numbers the full company numbers were powerful particularly ‘Let the River Run’ and the finale numbers ‘How Far I’ll Go’ and the touching signature song of the company ‘Beautiful Dreamer’
I must also congratulate the wardrobe staff on fabulous costumes. I’m sure 93 young people back stage frequently changing costumes must have been ‘challenging’ yet the show flowed smoothly with the cast making entrances and exits calmly.
No respite either for the onstage band who ably supported the singers.
L.Y.A.M.C. young people are so fortunate in having a dedicated, skilled production team and helpers who provide the valuable opportunity for developing an interest and the skills needed in musical theatre. I do hope that these youngsters will continue to enjoy what they are doing and progress into adult companies in the future, particularly the lads in ‘I Am Africa’ which was amazing !
This was certainly a most exhilerating and enjoyable concert. I was quite exhausted just sitting watching the energy on stage . LYAMC you sure were ‘Rocking All Over The World’
