I must say that I’m more of traditionalist when it comes to my music taste, but Wickersley Youngstars may have brought to the forefront my hidden ‘rock dude’ with their latest offering, Rock of Ages. At heart, the show is about love, with greed and fortune thrown in. Jonah Thompson, Director, should be congratulated in bringing this huge production to the Civic Theatre. Lucy Swift, Choreographer, produced stylised choreography that was inkeeping with the plot and was able to be executed brilliantly by all abilities. Will Ormesher, Musical Director, helped the cast produce some great vocal performances, and Will, himself was very entertaining. The onstage band, under Will’s direction, added to the overall look and feel of the show.

The cast were were very strong and so energetic that I was tired just watching them. Drew (Chris Thorpe) gave it his all and this came across the footlights. Sherrie (Calleigh Cottrell) has the most amazing voice and great stage presence. Calleigh owned the stage with every appearance and I for one can’t wait to see what this talented ‘young star’ does next. Bronte Simmons excelled as Regina, as she took on the money hungry and won, and her strong vocals were a delight to listen too. Speaking of strong vocals, Grace Castle, Justice, was simply stunning.  A powerhouse vocal performance. Thomas Wood (Stacee) proved yet again what a great performer he is as he took of the role of the arrogant rock star, and performed this ease. Hilda (Megan Hunt) and Franz (Oliver Wood) , our German developers, managed to keep their accents up throughout the show, and Oliver, soon became the audience favourite, especially during the number ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot’!

The role of Lonny is integral to the show, as Lonny breaks the 4th wall and serves as our narrator, making sure we, the audience, are always aware of what is happening. Rhys Jordan, was brilliant  in this role. His diction, and timing was spot on, and his energy certainly rubbed off on the audience. Rhys worked well with Evan Rowlands (Dennis) and their duet, ‘Can’t Fight This Feeling’ was a delight.

On the night I attended, there were a few sound issues, but it didn’t spoil the sheer enthusiasm and enjoyment that was on the stage. Overall, a great production, which was throughly enjoyed by the full auditorium.  Well done, Youngstars.
