In their short existence, Benchmark Musical Theatre have created an enviable reputation for the quality of their shows, setting the benchmark by which other groups should measure themselves. Rock of Ages (I can’t believe this is only their third book musical), is a brave departure from their previous style, being a jukebox musical based around classic rock songs from the 1980s – before a lot of the cast were even born! The show had its US debut in Los Angeles in 2005 and made it to the West End in 2011, being very successful in both locations, and around the world. It has quite a credible story of boy meets girl, which weaves the chosen songs together nicely without resorting to big set-piece numbers – indeed some numbers were tantalisingly all too brief.

We were presented with an impressive full-stage set featuring the Bourbon Room, a Hollywood bar, with the band set centre stage at the rear, very much looking the part of an 80s glam metal group. Scene changes, mainly adding and removing furniture, were made swiftly by the cast and crew and an impressive pace was maintained throughout. Lee Stoddart’s ingenious lighting really gave us the feel of an 80s rock concert. Sound by Seventh Wave Audio was perfect too, blasting us when necessary but still clear enough to hear underscored dialogue and lyrics. The band, under MD Dan Brown, produced an authentic sound with some gorgeous solos. Splendid costumes and wigs (Jennie English and Ross Cobbold) completed the picture, taking me back to my (late) youth!

Matt Gibbins was outstanding as Lonny, part narrator, frequently breaking the fourth wall, and part Puck-like character scampering around the stage spreading mischief and humour, helping the story along. Paired with Perry Ralls as bar owner Dennis Dupree, they made a grand double-act. Would be lovers Drew and Sherrie were played with great confidence by Sam Townsend and Amy Pickance. Sam seems to have become a little typecast as a failed rockstar having recently played the lead in School of Rock, but he had the audience in the palm of his hand willing him to succeed. Amy had the naïve-out-of-town-girl-aspiring-actress character to a T, and we all wanted them to realise their love for each other. Both are very able and versatile singers and stunned us with their interpretation of the lyrics.

Jacob Bailey was perfect as sleazy rock star Stacee Jaxx, with the voice to match. You could see he utterly believed he was a sex god that no girl could resist, and boy was he a flexible mover! Of course, everyone cheered when Sherrie laid him out with one punch. Olivia Robinson was spot on as the all-American Regina Koontz, determined to save the Bourbon Room from demolition by evil father and son developers Hertz and Franz Klinneman – fine characterisation by Alan Jenkins and Finlay Hughes, a lovely comic pairing. Emily Horner, as kindly ‘Gentlemen’s Club’ owner Justice Charlier, just shone with professionalism and style on every appearance – and what a powerhouse of a voice this lady has! The ensemble and supporting characters were just as good as the principals, not a weak link on the stage, all contributing to the powerful picture that was being painted.

Director Helen Stoddart has assembled a very strong cast for this show, imbued it with her inimitable style and touches of humour, and they have rewarded her dedication with the energy and enthusiasm that they gave to every moment of the performance. The choreography (also Helen) was superb throughout, all interpreted precisely, with the act 1 and 2 finales being real, foot-stomping showstoppers.

What a stunning production this was, exhibiting top professional standards throughout. Whether you liked the music or not, this show drew you in and swept you along with the huge amount of energy and life the cast gave it, leaving you in a dazed heap of admiration at the end, totally uplifted by the whole experience.
