How on earth do you begin to review a show like’ Rock of Ages’, full of all those 1980’s iconic rock anthems, remembered from my youth!!!!!. The audience certainly lapped it up. The general presentation of the show was very good, and the story was clearly told.
All the cast got into their characterisations of their roles very well, including all the ensemble numbers. The principal singers had obviously worked extremely hard to reproduce the rock genre required. I particularly enjoyed Sophie Edmondson, playing her first principal role, well done Sophie. Andrew McMinn and Kim Fisher, both showed us their excellent singing voices. There were some excellent comedic roles, notably Daniel Mc Creedy. He must have worked really hard, playing such a large part, as well as directing the show. Adam Mc Creedy as Franz, showed his comedy talents, to great effect, and made the audience laugh out loud. All other principal singers fitted into their roles very well. The choreography was suitably raunchy, including some eye watering pole dancing, and as always the dancers were completely in sync with each other.
The rock band accompaniment was brilliant, and kept up with the singers. Well done Mark, you really must have had a mammoth job on your hands, teaching the ensemble, and principal singers to reproduce those iconic songs, there were some lovely harmonies. On the night I attended, sometimes the balance between band and performer wasn’t perfect. In the first act particularly, at times it was difficult to pick out the lyrics, This improved greatly in Act 2.
The set worked well and suited the production, and there was no downtown between the scenes. Good pace is essential in a show like this, well done to the crew. The lighting was very effective and enhanced the production. The costumes, worked well and were in period.
Thank you to WADAMS, and everyone concerned for a very entertaining evening. We, along with the audience enjoyed the show very much, it’s great to see that the show is sold out.
As always the society hospitality was exemplary.
