Pickering Musical Society’s production of Robinson Crusoe was a spectacular showcase of talent, humour, and creativity, proving once again why their annual pantomime is a must-have date for the diary. With a packed audience eagerly anticipating the show, the society did not disappoint, delivering a delightful evening of entertainment under the expert direction of Luke Arnold.
From the moment the curtain rose, the audience was transported to an adventurous world, thanks to the stunningly designed stage. The surround, crafted as a detailed map with palm trees, set the tone for the story, while the scenery brought a variety of locations to life, including York, a deserted island, and a picturesque countryside lane. The seamless scene changes kept the show moving at a good pace, ensuring the momentum was never lost.
The musical elements of the show were, as always, exceptional. The cast’s singing was outstanding, supported by a spirited and well-rehearsed nine-piece band led by Musical Director Clive Wass. The selection of songs added depth and emotion to the production, with standout performances of You’ll Never Walk Alone and If My Friends Could See Me Now eliciting enthusiastic applause from the audience. A true highlight was the rendition of Friendship, performed by Courtney Brown as Josephine Arkwright, Jack Dobson as Isiah Oldroyd, and Lilian Plowright as Aggie Sidebottom, who joined for the reprise. Their chemistry and vocal harmony brought warmth and humour to the performance.
The costumes were equally impressive, showcasing a vibrant array of designs that added colour and personality to the characters. The attention to detail in the wardrobe enhanced the overall visual appeal of the production, uniting the cast and immersing the audience in the story. The movement and choreography were flawlessly executed, thanks to the expertise of Rebecca Neacsu and the professional contributions of the Sarah-Louise Ashworth School of Dance, whose dancers were seamlessly integrated into the cast. The chorus radiated charisma, energizing the stage with their presence.
The cast delivered stellar performances across the board. Danielle Long was a commanding presence as the Principal Boy, Robinson Crusoe, embodying the adventurous spirit of the role. Marcus Burnside, as Dame Esmerelda Crusoe, was a comedic force, perfectly complemented by Stephen Temple as Billy Crusoe and Rachel Anderson as Senorita Juanita Gonzales. Their playful interactions and quick wit had the audience in stitches throughout the show.
John Brooks brought authenticity to the role of Josiah Arkwright, while Evelyn Plowright charmed as the Fairy of Hearts Desire, her melodic voice adding a magical touch. Courtney Brown, as Josephine Arkwright, delivered a standout performance, shining both musically and theatrically, and fully embracing the character’s emotional and comedic moments.
This year’s Robinson Crusoe was a triumph, showcasing the immense talent and hard work of the Pickering Musical Society. With its stunning scenery, superb music, vibrant costumes, and excellent cast performances, it was a joyous celebration of theatre. Year after year, the Pickering pantomime never fails to impress, securing its place as a treasured highlight of the local calendar.
